Our story

Oúnjẹ jáde began with a simple question: who is feeding our community?

Rooted in Community

Our name comes from Yoruba, meaning “food comes out” — we bring real Nigerian food out of the kitchen and onto the tables of our community. Fresh, intentional, made with a love that doesn't come from a factory. This isn't about fast-food trends; these are meals meant to be remembered long after the last plate is cleared.

Before Restaurants, There Was the Compound

In Yoruba culture, food was never a solo act. You cooked for the whole compound; children ate first, then adults, then the elders told stories. The kitchen was the centre of everything — where decisions were made, grief was held, and strangers became family. “Nobody left hungry. Nobody left alone.” The tradition came with us, and Oúnjẹ jáde keeps it alive.

Cooked by Community

Cooked to order, the same day, with real ingredients. No shortcuts, and seasoning that doesn't come from a packet — the kind that makes someone close their eyes on the first bite.

Quiet and Powerful

Every order supports a Black woman-owned Manchester business and keeps Nigerian food culture alive in the diaspora.

Made in Manchester, made with love

Two Yoruba names. One story.

Jadesola means “to emerge into wealth.” Oúnjẹ jáde means “food comes out.” Put them together and you have the story of a Manchester kitchen where a Yoruba woman turned the food she grew up on into something her whole community could share.
